Jump Starts / Bio

Recently nominated for Best New Band by the 2011 River Front Times Music Awards, Jump Starts hit the St. Louis music scene running in 2010. This dynamic two-piece is the side project of good friends Justin Johnson (also of Pretty Little Empire) and Sarah Ross (also of Paper Dolls). Johnson is responsible for lyrics, catchy progressions on acoustic guitar, and vocals, while Ross provides constant support on drums and vocals. Since their inception, Jump Starts have played live at St. Louis’ community radio station KDHX, as well as several popular venues around the city, opened for up-and-coming national acts Breathe Owl Breathe and Caroline Smith &the Good Night Sleeps, and recorded their debut album Ready, Set, Go...

Jump Starts play a unique array of styles from rockabilly to pop punk, but can always be recognized by their upbeat tempos, overlapping vocals, complementary harmonies, and full sound. Their influences range from Buddy Holly to Men at Work and Social Distortion. According to Roy Kasten of KDHX raidio their sound “evokes bands as disparate as the Violent Femmes and the Modern Lovers.” -Roy Kasten KDHX Radio
