FrazierBand / Bio

FrazierBand is an original bluegrass/rock quintet from East Nashville, Tennessee, USA started in 2010 by John Frazier (composer/singer/multi-instrumentalist). Members include seasoned bluegrass and country musicians, rounded out by members of the rock and R&B gospel music community from Nashville. The band’s first full-length recording project was released in early 2012 and FrazierBand is currently touring in support of it.

John Frazier is an American composer, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, bandleader, and record producer. He co-fronted the award-winning contemporary bluegrass band Hit & Run in his early twenties while living in Colorado before relocating to Nashville, TN in 2007, where he established himself as one of the most sought after instrumentalists and vocalists in the bluegrass, newgrass, and jam-grass community, in addition to supporting several country and americana artists with their tours and recordings.

Early Career 2001-2007:

Hit & Run Bluegrass made history by becoming the first band to win both prestigious band competitions at Rockygrass (2002) and Telluride Bluegrass Festival (2003). Soon Hit & Run was bringing their “authentic yet modern” bluegrass to concert stages in almost every state in the U.S. as well as in Canada, including the esteemed Grey Fox, Telluride, High Sierra, and Rockygrass Festivals. Driven by Frazier’s leadership, songwriting, arranging, and instrumental prowess on mandolin and fiddle, Hit & Run became one of Colorado’s most electrifying acoustic touring acts. According to Denver’s Westword, “Something’s got to be up when one bluegrass band suddenly surpasses all the others. Here in Colorado, that band is Hit & Run.” In 2005, the band won first place at the highly competitive SPBGMA Band Championship in Nashville and was invited to showcase at International Bluegrass Music Association’s annual conference. The band’s two studio albums, “Beauty Fades,” produced by Tim Austin (Lonesome River Band) and “Without Maps or Charts,” produced by Kenny Smith, were so popular that the band sold ten thousand independently—a feat for a group of 20-somethings on their own.

Nashville 2007-present:

After moving to Nashville in the winter of 2006/2007, Frazier immediately established himself among Nashville's elite acoustic performers, securing spots in Newgrass ensemble John Cowan Band as well as the grammy award winning Jim Lauderdale Bluegrass Band. In addition, Frazier has toured or performed with Bluegrass Legends Del McCoury, Tony Rice, and JD Crowe, Newgrass pioneers Sam Bush, and Bela Fleck, singer-songwriter legend John Prine, and country music star Dierks Bentley. In 2009, Frazier toured playing and singing with the Grammy and Emmy winning actor/comedian/banjo player Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers. During the tour, Frazier, Martin, and the Rangers co-wrote the song “Go Away, Stop, Turn Around, Come Back,” which was recorded on Martin’s subsequent release, Rare Bird Alert. Frazier has recorded and produced 9 studio albums, and has fifty songwriting credits. Frazier’s live and television performance credits include The Grande Ole Opry, Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Telluride Bluegrass Festival (4 times), Merlefest, Bill Monroe Memorial Bluegrass Festival (Bean Blossom), Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, High Sierra Music Festival, The “World Famous” Station Inn, The Walt Disney Symphony Center in Los Angeles, Royal Festival Hall in London, Later with Joules Holland, Austin City Limits, and PBS.

In the winter of 2010, Frazier founded FrazierBand and began pre-production on a full-length recording project. The project features original songs/compositions written by Frazier and performed by a group of musicians that he assembled from amongst his friends in Nashville. The style of music is a fusion of bluegrass, rock, pop, and jazz, and draws influences from the experiences that Frazier has had throughout his life living in different parts of the U.S., traveling as a professional musician, and existing as a human. Each of the members of Frazier Band is a virtuoso musician in his own right, with accumulated credits ranging from the Grand Ole Opry to George Clinton to Steve Earle to Mumford and Sons. After completing the recording in the summer of 2011, the band began performing in and around Nashville, and shortly thereafter began to branch out regionally and nationally.

“Frazier’s compositions, which account for most of the album’s material, are nicely executed blends of jazz, string band music and more, and both the picking and the singing are top-shelf.” -The Nashville Scene

“John has put forth a new level of thought in his work. FrazierBand’s music displays a fiery level of enthusiasm to present a core of groove graced by tasteful licks and pure original tone. Almost like a newgrass and root-based version of the Flecktones, this music is refined and honorably cool.” -Jens Hybertson, Colorado Bluegrass Music Society

“John Frazier, wow. I don’t think there is enough space here for me to accurately describe my fondness for John. Let’s just say that of the hundreds of folks I’ve encountered in a life of music, he is one of the most positive, thoughtful, intelligent, and gifted men I have had the pleasure to create with. By the way, the FrazierBand record is fabulous!” -John Cowan, The Voice of Newgrass

"This is the best new music I have heard in Nashville in years." - Billy Block
