What means the world to you? Money? Cars? Love? Happiness?
We all live this life for different purposes…but often times, our paths are decided for us by everyone except ourselves. With only $2,000 and the dream of creating his own path, David Vines packed all of his things, bought a one way ticket to Hollywood, and moved on his own from his hometown Richmond, VA at the age of 19. On January 1st, 2013, almost 5 years later, he released his debut album Fly…735, an album consisting of tales that express his viewpoints and experiences in life as well as in love, based on these pivotal years in his life. The title of the album is symbolic because 735 was the number of the plane he boarded when he first moved to Los Angeles.
According to David, “It’s time to return to thoughtful song writing, authentic vocals and most importantly, ingenuity. Those are the things that make music so amazing; a lot of which are currently missing. It seems as though we take for granted just how powerful music is as an art form and how much it impacts society…it truly connects us all. I remember as a kid, I would listen to my favorite records by my musical idols, and I can’t express how much it meant to me to hear a song and think, ‘Damn, someone else feels the same way I do!’ With my music, I aspire to be a voice for the voiceless, because there are a lot of things that need to be said, and not enough people willing to do so.”
Is it R&B or Hip-Hop? Pop or Soul? Underground or Commercial? What’s your image? How will you market yourself…what’s your gimmick? “At the end of the day, it’s music, and none of those things matter,” says David. “Music is self expression, and I draw from everything that inspires me. I listen to all forms of music, and I would be doing myself a disservice if I created my art with constraints. I don’t care for titles because they tend to lend to the stereotypes that exist in the minds of most people. I wrote this album as therapy for myself, and hopefully as inspiration for everyone else in the world…not just a select few people.
So what would YOU attempt to accomplish if you had no fear of failure? What dormant dreams lie deep inside your heart that your mind continuously tells you to dismiss? “Fly is having no fears in aspiring to be the highest you possible. Few things in this world are infinite: Presence. Being. Awareness. Consciousness. Impact…Fly.”
