Vance Thomas Hoffman was born on Sept 15,1978, to mother Ruth Rogers and father George Di Matteo(deceased). Vance was born in Massachusetts and raised in Sacramento,CA by his mother and stepfather, James Lassiter Jr; but later on at the age of fourteen the family returned to Boston. Growing up, Vance got involved in gangs and the hustling mentality, which only led him into violence and legal troubles. Somewhere along the way he found peace in music, leading him to believe that music was a possible way out of the projects. Vance's influences were Prince, James Brown, Rick James, Lynard Skynard, Pearl Jam, LL Cool J, Run DMC, Beastie Boys, Nas and many more, just to say a few. During the course of writing poetry and experimenting with R+B and Hip Hop, he came to this realization, it was time to make an attempt at recording his lyrics. After inquiring with his cousins, who were already experienced singers, they told him to save up and purchase a karaoke machine; and thats exactly what he did. One of the first tracks he recorded was called "Check the stats," which became a local favorite. Realizing that he might have something to offer the music world,Vance decided he needed an alias. After thinking about it for sometime, he came to the conclusion that he would use the nickname his parents gave him,"POO". That name became well known to the local artist and the Boston music scene. After while, he formed a group with his three cousins, Wilbur "Rocky" Fowler AKA Wilbzy Rox, Keon Jamal Godfried AKA Key Bone and Herschel Russell AKA Young Hersch; this group was called the Macs. After this alliance was made ,Vance changed his name to Poo Mac. There was only one album recorded by the Macs and over the course of time this album has been lost and never recovered; Family ties remain but, the group is no longer. Not to long after the break up Vance entered into a new group called the "Mystic Derelicts"with his cousin Rocky. This group was formed by Edward Cefalo AKA Beast. The group "Mystic Derelicts"consisted of five members, Beast, Ronald Williams AKA R.A.W, Maurice Gavin AKA Justice, Vance Hoffman AKA Poo Mac and Wilbur Rocky Fowler AKA Wilbzy Rox. The group "Mystic Derelicts" went on to record two albums and perform at multiple venues. The Derelicts later traveled to Los Angeles, CA searching for a deal and in the process made many close relationships with people such as; Az Yet, Xhibit, La Face Records, Terry Robinson (Smokey Robinson's son), Bryan Gibson, Alon Aloni and many more, just to say a few. In conclusion; even though a record deal was not attained, the journey was not at all unsuccessful. After the trip, the artist in the group "Mystic Derelicts" went their separate ways to embark on their own personal quests and endeavors. Not too long after, Vance's mother was incarcerated for a four year prison sentence which drove vance to the streets.Vance later moved to Bronx,NY with the intentions of being a pimp but, after a three year stay in Hunts Point he decided to leave and return to Boston to continue his musical passion. Vance didn't stay long in Boston, he almost immediately moved to Florida to take his "One Man Show" on the road and avoid the "Boston night life," so to speak. While in Florida,Vance hooked up with Mucho, (produced the #1 hit rump shaker) sang by "Wrecks in Affect". Vance and Mucho worked on two tracks together, titled: "D.I.M.A.T.T.E.O" and "Omerta"; these two tracks went on to be played on over one hundred BDS radio stations attracting a great following. The song entitled "D.I.M.AT.T.E.O" played at #1 for two weeks straight in the U.K . While in Florida Vance also met and recorded two tracks with" Mr. Cheeks" of the platinum selling group called the "Lost Boys". After a two year stay in Fla. Vance's finances were depleted and he was again forced to move back home to Boston but, before he returned home he made the decision to stop in Atlantic City,NJ to visit an ex-girlfriend. While in Atlantic City, Vance hooked up with the Black Wall ST. and recorded a track called "Do Something" which was engineered by "Golden Child" and produced by "New Jersey Devil". After a short stay in Atlantic City Vance returned to Boston and hooked up with two unbelievably talented artist named Yung Piff and A.O; and that's when they formed the group called Chase Boys. Vance changed his AKA to "Free"and the "Chase Boys" are still together to this day.
