Lance James picked up the violin at 5 years of age and hasn't put it down since. His teacher soon discovered that he had perfect pitch. By the age of 7 he began learning piano and joined his local church choir. He was accepted to the Peter Britt Music Camp in the summer of 1986 where he met Sherry Kloss, a master student of Jascha Heifetz. She took him under her wing becoming his mentor. She focused not only on his innate technical abilities, but nurtured his individual musical style. He was later offered a full ride scholarship at the University of Puget Sound studying violin performance. During his youth, Lance had won many competitions and rose to first chair in the Eastern Carolina University Youth Orchestra as well as placing high in the NC State competition despite being only in 9th grade. On piano, Lance won 1st place in the Prince of Music competition, held in Charlotte, North Carolina. During the summer, Lance was playing professionally for a theater company in Morehead City, North Carolina, and worked as an accompanist for a 18th century dance group at the Governor's Palace in New Bern, N.C. Along the way, he studied Gospel music which further influenced his vocal style. At 16, when he moved to Vancouver, Canada, he wrote the music for multiple plays and a local Television show. He continued his studies at the Vancouver Academy of Music with Gwen Thompson, who studied with Josef Gingold, Jascha Heifetz, and Ivan Galamian. Inspired by Bobby McFerrin, he became interested in the voice as an instrument and continued experimenting with classical, jazz, and rhythm and blues, enabling a versatile sound, range, and quality to his voice. Lance started college for awhile but took a detour into the world of computers where he also excelled. Meanwhile, he was involved in a jazz flamenco band ("Gatos Papacitos") playing violin and occasionally keyboard and taught violin and piano at the San Elijo Dance and Music Academy. He currently plays electric violin for the Galway Guild (an Irish band) and records hook vocals for many hip-hop artists. He is currently working on two projects - "Return of the Love Song" and "Empty Orchestra".
