Shyla Shanay was born on October 21, 1986 in Newark, NJ. She started singing at the young age of 3; the same age in which her uncle proudly recorded her playing the harmonica and singing “Can You Stand the Rain” by New Edition. As a toddler, just learning to walk Shyla was mesmerized by Whitney Houston’s video “Oh I Wanna Dance with Somebody”.
Singing at home, church, school choirs, plays or just on the spot whenever asked, it was no surprise that she was a STAR in the eyes of many. Shyla’s “Multi-Talent” came forth loud in clear as she began acting, playing instruments and excelling at sports in school. Her talent was enhanced even more in church, where she often sang solos and performed liturgical dance and skits. Never one to shy away from a challenge, at 11 years old Shyla played the drums at a Sunday morning service after only a one-time lesson given the night before!
At the age of 12 she starred in “The Wiz” where she played Glenda, the good witch. The auditorium was packed for 3 nights. Each night Shyla was met with “cheers and applause” as her strong vocals and extraordinary acting simply amazed all in attendance. Adults and children alike expressed their disappointment in not seeing her in the leading role as Dorothy. Throughout high school and as a young adult, Shyla’s gift to sing along with her hilarious personality enabled her to SHINE in whatever arena she stepped in. Whether dancing in a local talent show or singing background in a school play, her GIFT was undeniable.
Inspired by artists Brandy, Mary J. Blige, Queen Latifah, Chaka Khan and feeling a spiritual connection with Pastor Shirley Ceasar, Shyla always knew that her passion for music would seal the deal and find a way into the core of her being!
