Melungeons started in 2006 after Teenage Love13 drummer Jay Martin and singer Rus Harper wanted to devise a musical project to keep in shape between Love shows. Brad Deaton, who had been in Evil Twin with Rus, as well as several local staples, joined on bass followed by Bill Irwin on guitar and Doug Hemphill on harmonica.
About a year into the project, Jay became a proud father and had to set aside the rock for a time. Local drum hero Kevin Trotter took up rhythm duties and the great shows continued.
Melungeons are a rock band with a hint of more primitive stylings with echoes of blues and rockabilly. Jay took the name of the lost culture of Appalachia. It is used with respect. Learn more about real Melungeons at melungeons.com
