Keashonna, a San Diego, CA native, has been on a progressive quest with her love for singing and songwriting. She first embarked upon this adventure as a young girl. She paid exceptional attention to musical formats, instruments, rythyms, lyrics, and beats played in songs of diverse genres. She often studied live performances and music videos of famous entertainers such as Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Paula Abdul, New Edition, and Prince to name a few. Often times she rehearsed songs and dance routines with her childhood friends. Her mother, “Penny”, enrolled her and her younger sister, Christina, in ballet classes at Balboa Park and they modeled in various fashion shows throughout San Diego. Keashonna’s singing debut was in the children’s choir at her local church where she sang her first solo “Lord Be Glorified” (…In my life Lord be glorified, be gloried today…) Keashonna became a performing arts student at San Diego’s SCPA (School of Creative and Performing Arts) where she embraced her interests in visual and performing arts. Her jazz, tap, and ballet teacher at SCPA was renowned San Diego beacon, Donald Robinson.
She further developed her signing and modeling interests at Gompers Secondary School. While attending this California distinguished school from the 8th-12th grade, she sang in the choir and modeled in the school’s anticipated “Music Fest” productions, under the direction of her beloved instructor, Sharletta Richardson. Off stage, Keashonna was recognized by her English teacher, Laurie Eisenberg, as being an advanced writer. Keashonna was shocked by the compliment as writing concise, succinct, meaningful, and powerful material came very easy for her. She used her singing and writing abilities as a resource to help her through hard times and challenges in life. Keashonna encountered several “perceived” setbacks in high school such as having an estranged relationship with her father, repeating the 8th grade due to failing classes, suffering from severe emotional stressors, and becoming a teen mom. Needless to say, she did not allow any circumstance to stop her from believing in herself, achieving at a higher level, and accomplishing her goals and dreams. As a matter of fact, these things fueled her fire to surpass societal expectations and stereotypes. Keashonna graduated from high school on time , earned her high school diploma on time, and gained admission into SDSU where she studied with an academic scholarship. She was 17 years old when she entered college.
At SDSU Keashonna studied to become a School Counselor. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, a Masters degree in Counseling, and a School Counseling Credential. She evolved as an acclaimed writer, poet, and speaker. Her professors and peers would recommend her to assist others with writing projects.
Because Keashonna experienced many of the traps and pitfalls of underserved and underrepresented youth in Southeast San Diego, she realized her responsible purpose was to make a difference in the lives of at- risk youth and to equip them with academic, career, social emotional skills and guidance. Keashonna has counseled students at San Diego High School of International Studies, Lincoln High School, SDSCPA, Johnson Elementary, San Diego Urban League, Reclaimed Hope Youth Center, & Nae Nae‘s Music Center. She also served as a volunteer Head Cheer Coach, Business Manager, and Team Parent for Valencia Park Pop Warner Midget division. All of these roles demonstrate her love for the Southeast San Diego community, commitment and compassion for youth, and her desire to help them succeed. While in these roles she continued singing and writing songs and poetry. She was a worship leader and praise team member at Living Word Faith Ministries Int’l, and a Praise Team member at City of Hope Int’l at Faith Chapel. She was also a student at Nae Nae’s music academy & performed as a soloist in some of their community productions and events.
To date, Keashonna has written over 80 songs and countless poetry pieces. Her writings depict her life’s dreams, challenges, triumphs, stories of persistence, constant faith, and most of all Love. Keashonna’s very first studio recording was her new single “Heaven”. Her song “Heaven” celebrates her identity and THE SOURCE of her strength and ability.
