Del Smith Penny Productions / Bio

Well, it's about time I created an electronic presence. I've been doing it for years for my friends and fellow musicians out of Paradise Ridge Studios up in remote Humboldt county, California, and now out of the Santa Cruz mountains. It's gonna take a while, though. I have a long and interesting story to tell filled with many good friends and great musicians. And this is one of the great dilemmas of the digital music era - what do you do with your time, play your music or sit in front of a computer typing all this crap in? Answer: mostly music, a little computer profile updating here and there. Stay tuned...and check in periodically to see what's new.

Here's an outline:

I'm a guitar and bass player, sing, write, engineer and produce other people's music. Recently moved back to the Bay Area after homesteading in the remote wilderness of Humboldt county for 15 years. Now carving out my place in the Bay Area music scene. I play guitar and sing in Los Altos-based party band Doc Roc & the Disorderlies, play bass in Milpitas-based boogie blues band Sky Kings, and play bass and guitar for songstress extraordinaire Karie Hillery. But I want to play MORE.

Didn't start playing seriously until I turned 40 in 1993, but made up for it by becoming an unabashed musical slut since then (ask anybody who knows me ;-). Performed as bass, guitar, and/or singer in a multitude of weekend bands, played a few hundred gigs, am totally comfortable performing as front man or side man. Have pro equipment in all directions (bass, guitar, PA, studio), and a truck to haul it all around in.

Looking to get a local project going. Prefer to focus on originals, but willing to play covers as a bridge for the audience to the original music. Have dozens of original songs. Put my own style on everything, not interested in performing note for note covers of anything.

Stylistically, I tend toward melodic stuff - rock n roll, blues, funk, reggae, R&B, western swing, country, ambient and old timey music. I'm not much into metal, screamo or grunge. Rap is cool if it has a groove. I have no experience with jazz at all. Equipmentally, I'm a Tele/Fender Twin kind of guy on guitar and play a Precision bass.

Personal long range objective is to gig regularly and produce a few CDs of original music before going off into the big gig in the sky, but equally interested in just getting together to play some music as I'm new in town. I'd like to be playing every night of the week, not necessarily in one project. Making good music is the most important thing, but am experienced with and and willing to hustle gigs, produce and/or engineer recording sessions, and seriously promote a band if it comes together.
