Hailing from a small working class town east of Vancouver BC, along the banks of the mighty Fraser River, the Whiskey Kings are a southern rock blues band formed in Mission, BC, Canada in late 2011. The live shows are an exciting and entertaining rock and roll show full of energy, antics and unexpected twists and turns. The music is an interesting and comfortable blend of old meets new, a melting pot of gritty bluesy southern rock, boogie rock, Americana, folk, rockabilly, punk, and hard rock, with a focus on catchy riffs, melodies and big choruses. The lyrical content is intelligent, nostalgic, poignant and sometimes... well... just about nothing but a good time.
Rick Speke started playing the drums at the age of 8, influenced by the great bands of the 60's, 70's and 80's. For many years he played drums in an Vancouver Indie rock band called Epsilon Knot (Vancouver Seeds finalists 1994), and was signed to the independent Label Turtle Records based out of Vancouver, gaining some success and notoriety within the Vancouver music scene, some airplay on local rock radio, Canadian college radio and a few spins on Canada's music video network MuchMusic. In summer 2011, Rick started writing and recording songs for the project that would eventually become the Whiskey Kings.
Pete Konrad was introduced to Rick, by Ricks brother, before a Roger Waters concert in 2010. They found that they had similar backgrounds, and similar views of life and music. They now form a tight bond concerning the inner workings of the band. Pete has spent many years touring the countryside in various bands, and his blue collar, no B.S. hard workin attitude, hard rock guitar style, love of Harleys, Classic Cars, Gibson Guitars and Marshall Amps, give the Whiskey Kings the hard edge that nicely compliments the Americana style.
Ryan Thomson joined the Whiskey Kings as a 2nd lead guitarist, slide guitar and harmonica player. Ryans musical influences are somewhat more diverse than the other Whiskey Kings, he loves rockabilly, surf, skate and hard punk music, yet he is a huge fan of Neil Young. Ryan has ammased many hours of live and recording experience through many musical projects he has been in, which began with being the singer in the legendary Saskatoon band Funky Wet Beavers, then forming Hookers Of Fire, later joining Superstock on guitar and finally the Whiskey Kings.
Corey McPherson and Rick met after Rick heard some songs that Corey had written and recorded, and Rick felt his style was very Whiskey King-esque. Corey was invited to come out and jam, and right away, his personality, energy and style clicked with the band. Corey also has his own recording studio where he writes and records his own material as well as working with other artists and projects such as his acoustic blues band "The Bluefly Trio"
Dave (Carlos) Roberts is a long time buddy of Coreys and joined the Whiskey Kings in May of 2014, and immediately fit in fantastic with the band. His ability and demeanour were the perfect fit for this group of guys. Dave has a long history of touring and playing in and around the Vancouver rock scene, at the same time that Rick was, and at times they shared the same stages but in different bands, and have now come full circle to play in the same band.
