The Buzz Contenders / Bio

Genre: Blues / Rock

Location: Canton, Georgia, US

Members: Brett, Bob, Greg

Description:
3 professionals from different walks of life that work for a living and write / play music for fun. The Buzz Contenders started when Brett sent a blind email to the bass player, Bob, through a musician website. To Brett's surprise Bob responded (the previous 10 guys didn't) and they got together for a few writing sessions to see what the result would be. They clicked, the music clicked, and the The Buzz Contenders were born.

The music they write and play today is mostly rooted in blues but has a distinct upbeat syncopated groove; the band calls the style “progressive blues”. You will not find another artist that sounds like The Buzz Contenders (or vice versa) and sometimes it’s even hard to find The Buzz Contenders because of their busy lives. When you do find them you will be entertained by a 3-piece band with good vocals, interesting licks, and a burning desire to entertain the crowd with their unique style of music.

Bio:
Brett:
Started life as an accomplished drummer (no he wasn't born with sticks in his hands). Brett decided to pick up guitar in an attempt to communicate as a drummer to the guitar players in the various bands he was in. What he didn't realize is that he would get great satisfaction from playing guitar and the song writing ability the guitar affords. Today Brett no longer plays drums, not with the Buzz anyways, but he does focus on playing guitar and singing. Brett does the majority of composing and writes all the lyrics. Brett thoroughly enjoys old blues by the likes of Pinetop Perkins, Tom Waits, and Robert Johnson.

Bob:
Originally played alto and tenor saxophone in high school, loved the instrument but life got in the way and Bob stopped playing once he got to college. Years later Bob bought a cheap bass after hearing a friend play. He loved the sound but found it was a distinct departure from playing the sax. Bob tinkered with the bass for years the finally decided to take lessons from a professionally trained instructor. Bob still had a burning desire to play the saxophone and recently has started playing alto sax again. In fact you can now see The Buzz Contenders with Bob playing bass and sax, not at the same time of course! Bob loves listening to the playing styles of bassists such as Flea, Oteil Burbridge or Geddy Lee; or bands such as Oingo Boingo or Incubus.

Greg:
Greg grew up in a musical family mainly surrounded by pianist. At the age of six Greg decided he wanted to be different and asked his parents for drums. Early on drummers like Ian Paice of Deep Purple and John Bonham of Led Zeppelin and Kieth Moon of The Who caught his attention then Neil Peart of Rush, Billy Cobham and Carl Palmer made even bigger impressions. Today drummers like Terry Bozzio, Omar Hakim, Thomas Pridgen and Tony Royster Jr. are his main influences. When The Buzz went looking for a new drummer, Greg was all over it. Seeing him behind the drum kit playing an original like “It Doesn’t Matter”, or a ZZ Top cover like “Just Got paid”, you’ll see why he loves every second of it - and you will too.
