Groden was formed up in 2003 in Dzerzhynsky (Moscow area) as a vocal quartet. Originally their repertory included folk songs performed a cappella only. So far as all quartet members also performed with another bands as musicians Groden couldn't stay a vocal-only project for a long time. In 2006 the band was reformed and extended with four new members... In 2006 on Russian folk-rock scene there were no band with Slavonic folk colour but without stereotyped, stock pseudo-ethnic sounding. We couldn't accept that situation when truly musicaly rich but not very well known Russian folklore songs are not performed by Russian folk bands and even not reflected in their creative work. So we decided to amend this situation and that was the begining of Groden in it's present form... Denis, the composer and a band leader, made a rock arrangement of several little known Russian folklore songs and invited musicians who played very different kind of music from classical to post-punk and techno-death metal. The result was shoсking, but it was a positive shock. Groden brought to life a style of music which we ourself call "alternative ethno-core" - a mixture of folk tunes, rock grooves, metal riffs and even ska motives and classical music. And of course the main ingredient of this mix are Russian folk tunes and songs. Most of the songs were found and recorded by enthusiasts during ethnographical expeditions all around Russia from Russian North to southern regions. We took the legacy of Russian people - peasants, soldiers, Cossack, barge haulers, men and women, and shaped them in our own "ethno-core" manner.....
