Billy Canty was born and raised in the heart of cajun country, Morgan City, Louisiana. After his family relocated to Cape Coral, Florida in 1989 he began a serious teaching and drumming career right out of high school.
By his senior year of school in 1991, he was a highly awarded student, writing and teaching the music for his drum line in the marching band, giving private drum lessons and sneaking into jam nights at local bars, holding his own with the local pros over twice his age.
Shortly after graduating high school, Bo Davis, the owner of Sonic Recording Studio in Cape Coral, Florida took Billy under his wings and helped develop him into a professional session drummer at the age of only 19.
Soon the phone started ringing for Billy to record everything from country and jazz, to rock and death metal at many of the South West Florida area recording studios. Canty spent years teaching private lessons, highschool drumlines, performing in local pop, rock, jazz, metal and blues bands, musicals, and countless recording sessions. By 2005 Billy was a first call drummer, teacher, and clinician in the Southern Florida music scene. He developed a signature drum stick with American Drum and was a Pearl drum and Sabian cymbal educator endorser. He was finally beginning to get nationally and internationally noticed in the drumming and music industry. But tragedy struck.....
Sadly, on August 5th 2005, while performing at a rock show in Port Charlotte, Florida. Billys life was almost taken. He was attacked and hit in the back of the head with a bar stool and fell down a flight of stairs. He received a traumatic brain injury and minor spinal damage that would take him years to recover from.
After years of therapy, Billy retaught himself how to play drums again by watching videos of himself playing and teaching. He relearned the famous "Moeller" drumming technique by relating it to what he was doing in physical therapy and watching Jim Chapin instructional videos. Billy taught himself how to read music again by developing a way to "pronounce" rhythms using binary code. In some ways the brain injury kicked his mind and body into overdrive. By 2009, he was teaching advanced rhythmic theories and drumming concepts that he developed after the brain injury to pro drummers and educators.
After reconnecting and playing for the legendary drum teacher Jim Chapin in April of 2009,
Jim wrote, "Billy, If you get any better, you'll make me sick. You are a very rare person. Talent and dedication personified. You are one of the greatest, but you keep getting better!"
Billy and his wife Kasey relocated to South Bend, Indiana in 2009. He is currently teaching private lessons, performing with local bands and musicians, running a project recording studio for area musicians on a budget, and constantly writing and recording originals.
Billy has not given up on his career goals to be a national touring and recording drummer / artist. Billy is prepared for touring, recording sessions, fly dates, clinics, festivals, master classes, and sub work for regional and national acts.
Billy studied six years with the legendary teacher Jim Chapin and just as many years with world renowned West African percussionist Aiyb Dieng.
