Multi-instrumentalist Marcos Lightning Harkness finds meaning and beauty in seeming contradictions. He is proud to release his debut EP under the solo moniker The Marcos Lightning on April 10, 2012.
Born in Panama to parents of mixed nationalities, he grew too tall and white to fit in as a Latino, but never really felt he belonged in rural Pennsylvania, either. He couldn't cut it as a good Catholic boy, and could only observe his grandfather's Judaism from the outside. Too easily distracted to excel at piano or violin, he was also too much of a goody-two-shoes to be a proper rocker.
Having mis-spent his youth failing to be an advertising drone, he rediscovered his muse in 2005 and began performing in a drums/guitar duo called Los Pelones in Raleigh, NC. While living in Washington, D.C., he turned his apartment into the hub of a neighborhood folk music scene, sprouting two bands — the bluegrassy buskers The Stick Mob, and the eclectic cabaret collective The Banana Monopoly. He is also a member of the quirky, soulful Carrboro, NC folk duo, Quiet the Voices.
Marcos' songwriting includes elements of jazz, blues, appalachian balladry, and punk intensity.
