Indigo Moon / Bio

Moments R Movements...If You Let Them BE...
Kate Hess (Indigo Moon) is a lyricist, spoken word artist, vocalist, choreographer, dancer, and actor. Her first poem was published at the age of 11. She was inspired to do Spoken Word Poetry when she discovered the work of actor/poet, Saul Williams. Kate grew up studying classical piano for six years, along with extensive training in dance, voice, and acting. She got accepted to the BFA Musical Theatre program at Emerson College and studied theatre/media arts/radio. At Emerson she became a DJ on WERS, the top college radio station broadcasted throughout the Northeast, for the underground electronic & hip hop station, “Revolutions.” She then developed her own show called, “Sultry Sounds from the Lounge.” She attended the highly selective experimental theatre college-credit training program, Trinity/La Mama Experimental Theatre Club, studying mixed media performance, experimental theatre, acting, movement, voice, butoh, while interning, and developing original work culminating in a performance at La Mama E.T.C. as part of the program. In 2008 she started performing in the NYC poetry clubs, while singing background vocals for reggae and African bands, such as Sekouba & The Bolomba Band (2011). She started her band/collective, Moon Frequentzy, in 2013, and had her debut with the help of guitarist, Gabriel Gordon (Natalie Merchant), backing her up. She has performed original work over the past few years at music/poetry/theatre venues, such as, Dixon Place, La Mama E.T.C. (Poetry Electric Series), Nuyorican Poets Cafe, Nublu, Shrine, Rose Live, Leopard Lounge, Pyramid Club, Bowery Poetry Club, Zebulon, and earlier at “Summerstage” for the choreographer, Marta Renzi. She has shared the stage with artists such as, Kevin Batchelor & Cedric Brooks (The Skatalites), Toni Blackman, Keith Wildchild Middleton (STOMP), Mad Professor, and others. She is currently finishing her first EP entitled, “Lucid Earth,” with a producer/emcee/percussionist named Srikalogy, who blends dub, world beats, hip hop, reggae, and sacred mantras into his music. She has been collaborating with other dj’s/producers as well. In 2014, Kate founded her dance collective, Earth Vibration Dancers, and had her debut performance at Dixon Place for “Under Exposed,” the Emerging Choreographers’ Series shortly after that. Her mission is to keep speaking her truth through lyrics; and to create experiential soundscape performances igniting the senses through music, dance, words, and media. Her life mission is to empower others, especially the underserved, through the use of voice and movement. Her work is a birthing process of her life experience for cathartic transformation for others and herself. To view her dance work: earthvibrationdancers.tumblr.com
