Surgeon is a progressive metal band from Philadelphia comprised of Sean Bolton, Lydia Giordano and Ruston Grosse (former Rumpelstiltskin Grinder, Woe, and touring drummer for Master).
Described as “visceral beautifully-executed prog metal“ that’s all about “intensity and attitude," Surgeon is set to release their second album, Chemical Reign, in April 2013. The album mixes hooks with intricate melodies, crafting each song as an individual piece of art, but still creating a consistent album that is ambitious and bold. The album captures the raw energy that the band unleashes live; as the three seasoned musicians have become known throughout the Philadelphia region as one of the areas top live acts.
The band combines influences ranging from progressive rock to metal, creating a sound that is both familiar but not derivative. Exotic dual guitar harmonies of Giordano, thundering double bass drums by Grosse, and the crushing rhythms and thought provoking lyrics of Bolton are all weapons in Surgeon's arsenal.
Chemical Reign was produced by Surgeon and Kevin Antreassian ( Mike Portnoy, Dilinger escape plan, The Number 12 looks like you and Russel Allen of Symphony X ) at Backroom Studios in Rockaway, NJ as a follow-up to their debut album, Angry Guest which was recorded in Chicago by Steve Albini at Electrical Audio. At Backroom, the band found ways to unlock new potentials and explore sonic plains that they only grazed upon before. Antreassian was able to capture this dynamic and contain the high energy the band unleashes in their live performances. A leaked song from the Chemical Reign sessions titled "Watching You" has already been picked up by WXPN.
