Glenn Swann-Shakuhachi / Bio

Began Shakuhachi study in 1994, teachers include Tomie Hahn, Steven Rowland, David Wheeler, and currrently Kawase Junsuke III, Iemoto of Kinko Ryuu Chikuyusha. I frequently perform as well as teach in the Princeton Nj area, and in New York City. Some highlights include the Coalition For Peace Action's Nagasaki/Hiroshima Memorial; Yearly Lunar New Year and MidAutumn Festival recitals at Holsome Tea in Princeton; the Rutgers Japanese club's Sakura Matsuri; doing a history/background lecture and performance for High School Japanese classes in Newark; providing music for Shumei New York events; and accompanying Ishigure Masayo Sensei's Sawai Koto Academy at the Tokyo Fiesta in Grand Central Station, the yearly summer Japanese Music Festival in Central park, as well as other venues. I play Kinko-ryuu Honkyoku and Modern pieces, but have particular affinity for Jiuta/Sokyoku and pieces from the early 20th century, as in Miyagi Michio and Fukuda Rando compositions. Lately I have been performing often with piano accompaniment for these pieces. Other than shakuhachi, I teach Taijiquan and study Tea Ceremony and Chinese Calligraphy, as well as various other facets of Japanese and Chinese culture and philosophy.
