At the heart of Grits & Soul are Anna Kline and John Looney. Known for their seamless harmonies and stirring melodies, they forge a powerful connection of musical influences for a compelling live performance: ranging from engaging and emotional, to hard-driving, honky tonk fun.
After the release of their debut album, Flood Waters, Grits & Soul continues to make their mark on the regional music scene, performing at MerleFest to Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion to Albino Skunk Music Festival. In 2015, they book-ended their year with Florida festivals Suwannee Springfest in March and Magnolia Fest in October. In between, they opened for Jim Lauderdale in Asheville at the Ingles 4th of July Celebration, and for the Hackensaw Boys at Asheville’s Riverlink RiverMusic series, and thereafter headed to Europe, performing at Country Festival in Sint-Truiden, Belgium, and rounding out the trip with shows in France and Italy.
Bluegrass Unlimited Magazine gave the team a glowing review, calling Flood Waters “intriguing and enveloping.” The recording highlights the collaboration of a gifted lyricist with a talented arranger, together sharing a strong sensibility of stirring melodies and powerful story lines.
They are now working on a new album, and as they continue to forge ahead, their sophomore effort will be a departure from bluegrass, digging deeper into their blues, soul, and country roots.
Grits & Soul are a memorable musical team, having worked together for over 5 years now. They continue to hone their sound and songs onstage together, logging thousands of highway miles and hundreds of yearly performances.
