Brandon Primus / Bio

Brandon Primus The Soulful Strut Jazz Saxophonist
A creative and impresario of the art style of jazz, Brandon Marcele Spencer Primus career as a jazz saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist has encompassed the roles of composer, arranger, and instrumentalist. He is a hybrid of the contemporary and smooth jazz genre with a touch of R&B sound. Primus was heavily influenced by the music of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee jazz musician Miles Davis, and jazz legends that include, John Coltrane, Anita Baker, Grover Washington, Jr., and Kenny G. His style can be described as climatic, progressive, with a little Funk, R&B Jazz, that smooth and high energy.

Brandon Marcele Spencer Primus was born on October 13, 1983, in Shreveport, Louisiana. His creative music career spans over 15 years, beginning at the age of 10 where he played his first saxophone solo “When the Saints Go Marching In” at Morning Star Baptist Church in Shreveport, LA where he attended services. He was given a standing ovation, and right then he knew playing the saxophone was his life’s pursuit. His musical studies continued at high school where he played in the celebrated Huntington High School Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Jordan "Chuck" Edwards, and Darryl Evans who he credits for advancing his understanding and knowledge in music, specifically Jazz and Soul. While still in high school he landed a major gig playing at the Miss Teen USA Pageant at the age of 17.
In 2006, Brandon received the chance to be a contestant on the legendary television show "Showtime at the Apollo" in Harlem, NY. He simply wanted to showcase his talent but all things changed when he touched that symbolic “Tree of Hope”. He went on to win Amateur Night! He now joins the ranks of past and emerging African-American and Latino performers who have launched their careers from this show.

Brandon attended the University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM) where he pledged the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. He graduated from the prestigious Berklee College of Music, in Boston, MA where he was mentored by Walter Beasley, a prominent smooth jazz musician and one of his childhood influences. After graduating from Berklee College of Music, Brandon moved to New York in 2008 to take a job as a talent scout for Columbia Records.

This was very short lived as Brandon unwittingly discovered he was his own the ideal scout candidate. He then began to showcase his talent at the very places he previously scouted out for others in New York City. He performed at Ashford & Simpson's Sugar Bar, Cafe Wha Greenwich Village, Club Groove NYC, and the Village Underground a legendary New York club known as a proving ground for young talent. Playing at these places, Brandon started gaining exposure and created a following. He was now sharing the stage with artists like Rashaan Patterson, Jody Watley, Jeffrey Osborne, Eric Roberson, and performing at places like BB King's Jazz and Blues Night Club in Times Square and at the Birchmere Music Hall in Alexandria, VA.

Primus moved to San Diego, California where he received his law degree at the prestigious Thomas Jefferson School of Law. His California venues include, Bing Crosby’s, Four Points By Sheraton, San Diego Wine, 98.1 Smooth Jazz Festival, 98 Bottles, The USS Midway Museum, Palihouse Holloway in West Hollywood, and Pechanga Casino and Resort in Temecula, CA. Brandon is working on his title music project. This driven and talented saxophonist stirs up the emotions of listeners with his unforgettable signature march that is energetic, and addictive with each soulful sound. Jazz lovers will get convicted of wanting more of the ‘Primus’ touch. http://www.brandonprimusmusic.com
