The Skains are a six-piece, ska-reggae band, and a product of beach vibes. Their music comes from the soul and the beach into a fusion of roots reggae, new wave ska, and a Hawaiian essence. The band formed in 2008 and has progressed exponentially in the past three years. Unlike a lot of other local bands, these young men show a love for traditional Jamaican music infused with So-Cal beach rhythms and melodies, while exhibiting true talent for their individual instruments. Gavin Garcia, 18, is the lead vocalist and trumpeter, if you catch him at the angle at a show you will swear you are watching a young Hawaiian Louis Armstrong. Guitarist, Marty Janés, 18, is one of the most exquisite musicians of his age. He emigrated from Argentina alone at age 13 with a rich education of classical instrumentation and flamenco influences. Ben Wasserman, 18, is truly a delight to watch behind the skins. He brings a different edge to ska and reggae drumming that is not found anywhere else. Hunter Hartmann, 18, is a master of the bass guitar. He knows how to incorporate traditional Jamaican bass lines into San Diego rocker's reggae, as well as noodling with experimental, Les Claypool-like riffs. Zien Garcia, 16, is the best, most original tenor saxophonist in San Diego. If you close your eyes, you will think Charlie Parker is playing in a reggae band. Last, but not least is Wili Fleming, 19, vocalist and trombonist. Wili's voice is flawless, his tone with his voice and his horn are unmistakable in this town. The Skains released their first album, Night Owl, April 15, 2011. They are currently playing shows around the San Diego area and are more than half-way done writing their second album! Support some local amazing talent and give these kids some love!
