Steve “The Hammer” McKinley has been a musician for over 50 years. He started music in 1959 (at the tender age of 10) as a trumpet player. As the years progressed, he picked up more instruments such as french horn, baritone, mellephonium, and other brass instruments. He even delved into percussion, woodwinds and keyboards. As a senior in high school, he wrote and orchestrated (for a 60 piece orchestra) the recessional for his class graduation ceremony.
He took every class possible that in any way related to music. This continued through high school and into college at Ball State University in Indiana.
At the age of 15, he started guitar. When he was 16 he picked up an electric bass. It was then that he knew he had found a home. Bass has been his primary instrument since then.
Many dues have been paid by his many years on the road, opening for national and regional acts, playing in house bands, and doing the local bar band thing.
He is a power bass player that can play fast, funky and hard, then flip that over and play a sweet tender blues that will bring tears to your eyes.
As far as musical preferences, his natural leanings go towards blues (Texas and Chicago) and rock (like Rick Derringer and Pat Travers), but he likes all musical styles and can play them equally well.
On July 20, 2008, He was officially certified by "The Book of Alternative Records" as the Worlds Fastest Electric Bassist.
