Cultureal / Bio

Cultureal is a 10 piece reggae group with deep roots in Philadelphia. It is the only reggae band in Philadelphia to regularly perform with the complete large ensemble, including female back up vocalists and a horn section. The band can perform with as few as 3 people and as many as 13. Joshua Winer, lead singer/bassist/leader and Berklee College of Music graduate, put the band together in 2006 to satisfy a deep urge to further delve into the music of Bob Marley and other reggae greats. Over time the group has learned over 100 reggae classics including the music of Burning Spear, Midnite, Peter Tosh, Dennis Brown, the Heptones, the Gladiators, Israel Vibration, Jacob Miller, and many, many more. Since it’s inception, they have performed up and down the East Coast while playing consistently in Philadelphia venues.

Cultureal started out as a cover band. After years of playing, Over time the band developed it’s own original sound, and audiences were always begging for more. This motivated Joshua Winer to push the group in a new direction. About two years ago he started writing original music. Slowly but surely they have developed a sound that gives tribute to the dance rhythms and conscious lyrics that have made reggae a favorite around the world, while combining the many influences of the group. Cultureal uses Jazz, Blues, African, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, Indian, and Eastern European musical influences in it’s compositions and in the improvisational stylings of each member. In fact, the ensemble successfully fuzes Jazz and Reggae to create a new environment for expression.

The music of Cultureal gets people dancing while making people think about many of the current issues of today, as well as timeless universal concepts.
