“Nocturne,” the new full length album by Franklin based Paul J. Clark is his sophomore release and his boldest effort yet in the Alternative/Pop space. Intimately vulnerable, retrospective, and hauntingly melodic this grabs your attention and doesn’t let it go.
Paul is an independent singer/songwriter based out of Franklin, TN. With a focus on melody, his music is a blend of Piano Pop & Alternative Rock. All his music is written, performed, produced, mixed, and engineered by him (drums are arranged/compiled by him).
Paul's music is on iTunes, Apple Music, Amazon MP3, Spotify and other online retailers!
He began playing piano at age ten, guitar at age fifteen and has been writing/composing since then. Paul has been in multiple bands spanning many years. This is his first full length album as a solo artist.
Paul's Background and Experience
Paul began piano lessons on and off starting around age ten. At age fourteen, he attended a Christian music event, Creation East Coast. This experience would kindle in him a love of music and dream to one day play music at the highest possible level. He didn’t know it at the time but he would someday stand on that very stage but in a manner different than he expected (details to follow).
Shortly after this at age 15 he discovered a real love of music and began to pour himself into learning both piano and guitar. He also began writing. He had no recording equipment so would use a dual tape deck to record his ideas and layer tracks on top of each other. Of note, a song on his debut album, Love Grows, was originally recorded as a demo in that very way.
Throughout high school he played rhythm/lead guitar in his private school's worship team and developed his vocals in chorus class. He also started a band “Singular” where he played lead/rhythm guitars as well as the occasional vocal. He also was a contributing force behind the writing of the many original songs the band performed. The band performed both covers and original songs at various venues in Frederick, MD and the surrounding areas. They were in the process of recording their debut album when they disbanded as everyone went their separate ways after high school.
After high school, Paul attended Frederick Community College in Frederick, MD for his Freshman year where he received formal guitar lessons and began various studies in music. He continued playing in his church band and collaborated with other local artists.
In 1998 Paul transferred to Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA. He played rhythm/lead guitars on YouthQuest Ministries from 1999 through 2002. He also served briefly as a Team Leader. The ministry teams traveled on many weekends to play worship music, contemporary Christian covers, and conducted one on one discipleship with young people at churches/venues across various areas mostly along the East coast. Paul played lead/rhythm guitars on a studio album released during this time.
Also during this time, he took applied guitar lessons specializing in Jazz and studied music theory.
In the summer following college, Paul collaborated with a good friend to record an EP of original songs in Nashville, TN.
Following college, Paul got a job as a National Recruiter for Liberty University where he was given an unprecedented opportunity to travel as a Liberty tour Sponsor Representative with major contemporary Christian artists, the Newsboys, ZOE Girl, Superchick, and By the Tree for the 2002/2003 Newsboys Thrive Tour. He traveled across the nation and spoke about Liberty U. from the stage at each concert event.
He also represented Liberty U. at major Christian music festivals including Creation East, Creation West, Spirit West Coast, and other major events speaking from the stage about Liberty. At Creation East, ironically, Paul found himself standing on the very stage he looked up at when he was fourteen dreaming of becoming a professional artist to find himself honored to represent Liberty and speak about the college. Combined, he directly represented Liberty to a cumulative total of approximately 500K people.
Through these experiences, Paul gained valuable experience of life on the road, production of major music events, and networked with some amazing artists. He often reflects on this time as if he were walking in the shadow of giants, so close to his dream. He still wonders if that was the pinnacle of his ability to influence in that sort of venue.
In 2004 through 2007, Paul settled in Lynchburg and played lead guitar, the occasional keyboard and bass for the Brentwood Church band.
In 2005 he married the love of his life, Becky Clark who he now has three children with.
In recent years, Paul has focused on one of his greatest passions, writing and composing. He now writes, performs and composes all of his original music from his home studio. He began releasing original music in 2011, his first two singles to major online retailers in 2013, and his first debut full length album in 2014. He has been #1 on the Lynchburg ReverbNation Pop charts for long periods of time and has also been #1 (out of ~230) across all genres overall in the region. His current goal is to write great songs, build a fan base, and get exposure through radio and other methods.
A personal note from Paul
At the age of ten, I became a born again Christian. I came to the realization that I was a sinner, separated from a relationship with my Creator God. The Bible teaches that the consequence of sin is death, separation from God. I believe that Christ paid the penalty for my sin through his death on the cross and was raised again on the third day having paid the full penalty for my sin. I confess him as Lord (meaning Master, surrendering my will to His) and Savior having assurance of the forgiveness of sin and eternal life with Him through faith.
