Take four friends from Tennessee, Virginia, and Connecticut. Bind them together with the love and gift for tight harmonies, driving fiddle tunes, and old country numbers. Drop them off in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Let them write their own songs in the styles of Townes Van Zandt, Ricky Skaggs, John Prine, and Dave Evans. Throw them and their instruments—fiddles, banjo, guitar, harmonica, upright bass—into a Lincoln Town Car. Have them tour the east coast. Now toss them over to Ireland. Pack the same set-up into a two-door Fiat. Let them live off Guiness and pizza, pubs gigs and busking. Don’t give them a break. They don’t want one. What you get is the band Belle Star.
