David M. Young, also known as Duffy The Singing Cobbler, was born in the small coal-mining town of Clay, West Virginia. He started writing poetry as a child, and then started writing songs as a teenager. His step-father traveled for work, so besides spending summers in the Valley, Duffy grew up all over the country, attending eighteen different schools before graduating high school in Texas.
David took off hitchhiking after high school and landed in Nashville, Tennessee. He decided to stick around Music City a while and ended up living there for ten years, attending writers' nights with classic folk writers while bartending at Nashville staples like Springwater and Cantrell's.
He met his wife, Teresa, in Nashville, and they moved back to the Shenandoah Valley to have their daughter, Yvonne in 1988. A few years later, Duffy took up a job as a cobbler's apprentice in Waynesboro, Virginia at Graham's Shoe Service. He continues to fix shoes today along with Yvonne, as well as avidly writing and playing music.
