Canary in the Coalmine / Bio

'Canary in the Coalmine' is an Americana Folk band fronted by songwriters Jessica Pounds and Sandy Wicker. A haunting quality underscores striking vocal harmonies that provide a focal point for the band’s Appalachian folk and alt country influences.
It's that uniquely characteristic sound of their voices together that first caught the girls’ attention in July of 2009, when they crossed paths busking in the streets of Asheville, North Carolina. It was love at first sound. They were immediately struck by an undeniable compatibility, and although they lived 500 miles apart the band was formed within four months.
Since then, Jessica and Sandy have joined forces with some of Jacksonville’s finest musicians and are proud to be supported by them:

Peter Mosely on upright bass and backing vocals:

Peter is a Jacksonville native, and after various stints living and touring both nationally and internationally, he has settled back down in Riverside. Peter is the current writer and guitarist for veteran Jacksonville punk band Inspection 12, of which he was an original member. Peter was also the former bassist and writer for Capital Records act Yellowcard, another band from the First Coast.

Philip Pan on violin:

Philip received his BM and MM from the Juilliard School and currently serves as Concertmaster for the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. He performs and records many styles of music on acoustic and electric violin including classical, folk, country, jazz, pop and rock.

Arvid Smith on dobro, mellobar, electric guitar, and 12 string:

For over 30 years Arvid Smith has been working in and out of the musical box performing on a variety of stringed instruments and settings. From the main stage at bluegrass festivals to soundscapes at Rasa Yoga meet ups, his eclectic approach is always in service to the music.

‘Canary in the Coalmine’ is working on their first full length album, produced by Matt Grondin, after releasing a four song EP this past October. The band has been garnering local and regional attention within the Jacksonville area and beyond, performing at Suwanee Springfest and Magnolia Festival and is currently planning performances around the southeastern United States.
