If you were asked to Describe Miss. Johnnita “Princess of the West” you would say raw, edgy, sweet, humble, dynamic and above all Extremely Confident. But that’s only a partial dynamic to this west coast hip-hop artist. With virtually no female west coast rappers currently in the game, Miss. Johnnita has solidified herself as the new premier princess of the west, so strap on your seat belts cause its going to be one heck of a ride.
Miss. Johnnita, was born and raised in Fresno, Ca the third child of eight brothers and sisters. as a young woman she has seen her share of life altering experiences and joyous triumphs. At age 15 she decided to become a rapper. With help from her mother and family who believed and supported her , At age 16, she recorded her first single “Swing it”. Who ya know records a small independent record label has created an avenue for Miss. Johnnita to thrive artistically. After performing in a string of local talent shows and community events, she caught the attention of some local promoters who were looking for young talent. This led to her getting booked for local gigs in Fresno and the Bay area.
“I was born to perform, and give the audience a really good show but more so of what they deserve,” she said. Miss. Johnnita said rap music allowed her to become someone else which she express through her music. She credits Busta Rymes Eve, Missy Elliot, Lil’ Wayne and Eminem,etc but her early musical influences come from the Jacksons.
Miss. Johnnita musical style is a combination of her favorite hip hop artists, and said she thrives when she’s performing on stage. Like her favorite R B singer Janet Jackson her alter ego is Simply The Diva. Some of her most memorable performances include opening for Rap star Trina, local bay area rapper Dru Down and Suga Free. Her new mix tape C.D. simply titled “More than A Mix Tape” offers songs of which reflect her personal life and struggles. Her mix tape has 12 songs all of which are reflections of different phases in her life. After the loss of her mother in 2007, Miss. Johnnita said something inside her ignited a spark to take the rap game more serious. Songs like “Drop the World remix , her grimy emotional street edge sound, Promise, a song that tackles domestic abuse, and Respect my Diva a song about others respecting what it is that she does, Miss. Johnnita believes the key to her success in the rap game is not to be just a female rap artist, but to be an entertainer in general.
Miss. Johnnita is currently in the studio working on her debut album set to hit stores later this year. In addition to working on her debut album she is planning a promotional tour this summer as an opening act for some west coast acts.
