Like the first time you were introduced to Frank Zappa, Ween or They Might Be Giants, you might not understand exactly what Istvan is all about on first listen. You do realize that you are hearing something special, genuine and fun. This is not to say that Istvan’s music is simply an amusing distraction, he is capable of conjuring sounds and songs that deal with heartbreak, fatherhood, and the importance of not smiling too much. Istvan’s music is the sound that comes from a grown-up who takes immeasurable delight in writing a song that can be subversive or sweet or downright infantile. To see him play live is to truly understand just how much talent it takes to create music like his. If you stand up close, you’ll see a man whose feet almost literally speak for him, as he is constantly tapping an almost never-ending set of pedals. If you stand far away, you’d never know that his feet were moving at all as his fingers endlessly dance about the neck of his guitar. With a rotating cast of special guest performers Istvan treads electro acoustic waters with ease. No matter where you stand in the audience, you’ll see a great show punctuated by captivating sounds that envelope you in the sometimes strange, but always satisfying world of Istvan. As was overheard by some devotees at a recent show, “If you’ve heard Istvan, then you’re a fan; and if you haven’t, then you’re about to be.”
