Mark Mitchell writes songs. Or, more accurately, they find him. When he’s half asleep on the couch. Or when he’s in the shower and running late. Somehow, they beam into his brain from space when he least expects them, and he listens.
Maybe it’s just some weird side-effect from all those records he’s been addicted to his whole life. The classics by The Beatles and neo-classics of U2. The brilliant songcraft of Pete Yorn, Aimee Mann, Beck, Sting, Joseph Arthur, Crowded House and Luka Bloom. The raw power of Smashing Pumpkins, Neil Young, Sugar, R.E.M., Red Hot Chili Peppers and Lenny Kravitz. The quirky pop of The Cars, Fountains of Wayne and XTC. And the artful genius of Radiohead and Peter Gabriel, among so many others.
The result? Mark’s music runs the gamut. From dark acoustic ballads, to clever pop songs with infectious hooks, to big fist-pumping rock anthems. His unique approach blends biting social commentary with self-effacing humor and just a dash of optimism. All that within classic song structure, driven by a passionate vocal delivery.
Born and raised in “New York’s backyard”, Mark spent his formative years in Westchester and NYC, absorbing music like a sponge, avidly collecting rock records, going to concerts and attempting to sing like his heroes. The result is a head that almost always has a song in it. Over the past several years, Mark discovered that many of these songs were his own, and decided to finally have a go at realizing his songwriting and performing skills.
Largely a self-taught vocalist / guitarist / producer, Mark’s goal is to create fresh-sounding music as memorable as the tunes he grew up loving. Mark currently lives and works in St. Petersburg, FL.
