The pUKEs are a nearly all-female punk ukulele group based in London. We play songs by the likes of Dead Kennedys, Exploited, Xray Spex, The Clash, etc like you never heard ‘em before – as well as our own original tunes.
We first started meeting in January 2011 at our local pub, the Royal Sovereign, to have a few pints and bash out our favourite tunes on the ukulele. But we soon found ourselves in demand, playing gigs, festivals and punks picnics in London and beyond.
We’ve been lucky enough to share a bill with many of the bands who inspired us, including Sham 69, UK Subs, Vice Squad, Bad Manners, Chelsea, Menace, Subhumans and Splodge. Around half The pUKEs were ‘non musicians’ before we learned the uke, others have been in bands such as UK Subs, The Ramonas, Noise Agents, Infa Riot, PMT, Lost Cherrees and Rabies Babies.
In 2013 we released our debut EP on the seminal Damaged Goods label and received a grant from Arts Council England to deliver beginners ukulele workshops at festivals over the summer and produce a fanzine.
Our debut album - Too Drunk to Pluck - is set for release on Hoo Ha records August 2014.
