Ever run your finger along the rim of a glass with just the right amount of water? Remember the sound resonating from beneath? Mella is such a vibration.
A vocal injury almost stole her voice forever. Pop singer/songwriter Mella went through months of rigorous therapy and complete silence before her voice would come back. She had been singing since she was two.
Her first experience with music was harmonizing with classic Disney songs. When her father realized she could sing he bought her a keyboard. As soon as Mella learned to spell, she wrote so much she had to be bribed with vague threats of awaiting trouble to stop. Never mind getting in trouble today. “I do it [music] because if I didn't, my life would have no meaning. I don't do it for attention or fame or even money. I do it because I don't know how to stop, and I wouldn't want to,” said Mella.
Home to Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin and Sonny Bono, Mella’s home base of Detroit Michigan oozes with the musical influence of the greats. Singing something of a new age pop, within Mella’s lyrical content a listener can hear themselves. Vocally driven, she is a poet of simple wisdoms. She reflects brilliantly the frustrations and desires of her generation.
A soup of piano, snare and symbols pulls you by the hand into Mella’s single from her first album, Learn to Let Go. Blanketing your ears with a mesh of simple lyrics:
Hello where are you going today?
I know you feel so trapped in this place, so displaced
I know your pain I feel the same but we can make it better babe
Let’s run away at midnight
Tension builds behind her voice and leads into a soothing harmony. Mella’s earthy voice is textured and hopeful, like a ten dollar bill put inside the McDonald’s cup of a homeless man. She sounds like, “everything will be okay.” Letting loose at the last minute and a half of her song, Mella does let go, complete and organic.
Mellow and folksy, Mella uses her abilities and ear for music to produce and write for other artists as well. Her piano, ukulele and guitar are all a part of her creative process, she plays with synth pads for a nontraditional instrumentation and emotion as she writes. Her humanity reaches beyond her music into her community. She fosters animals and works closely with humanitarian organizations.
Because Mella loves to stay connected with her fans, she has a Tumblr her fans can use to follow her musical journey and daily life— missmella.tumblr.com.
Mella is currently working on her first album, which is almost complete and set to be released later this year. Her single, Tangerine, was even mixed by Ken Lewis who has worked with Eminem and John Legend. Demo versions of the record are available on her official website, facebook and reverbnation page.
