In the summer of 2009 Apostrophe became a band.
Formerly called MP3, the band had consisited of;
Mark Vincent on keyboards and rhythm guitar.
Peter Hugo on drums and vocals.
Phil Jordan on lead guitar.
Paul Odenthal on bass.
They had been looking for a vocalist and frontman for the band. After quite sometime looking, Phil was pointed in the direction of Sam Whitley.
They started talking about music after one of Sam's many surfing sessions at the local beach.
As it turned out lived in the district and in fact right across the road from the Pollok art gallery where Phil was a resident artist.
Sam had been singing in a couple of covers bands that weren't performing much anymore and he jumped at the chance to sing some original rock music.
After a jam session come audition at the practice room the final line up of Apostrophe was born.
Apostrophe is based around the skillful original music written by Mark Vincent. There is a real rock flavour mixed in with blues. Sometimes theres even a little taste of jazz to be hinted at in the interesting chord progression of some songs.
Mark, Peter, Paul and Phil are all seasoned musicians, having played in many bands over the years. Peter is still performing in a well known NZ covers band 'Loose Units'. Paul (our German import) plays in the band 'Choice' based out of Germany where he returns every NZ winter. The endless summers Paul enjoys are the envy of many.
Sams powerful vocals have brought a new sound to the band. Trained on modern and alternative rock music, Sam was keen to play some original material. Marks music was the perfect opportunity to do this. Sam had compiled many of his own lyrics over the years, performing very few of them. Now, with several of Marks songs requiring lyrics Sam could put some of his plethora of words and rhymes to use.
Peter and Mark both add a lot of harmonies to the songs giving Apostrophe a very rich and layered sound.
I will add more to the biography soon, unfortunately i have to do the work that pays the bills, maybe music will do this for us one day.
