U-MELENI , is an award winning multi-talented Zimbabwean Performance Artist, raised in Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa. Winner of the 1st American Idol Underground Spoken Word Competition in 2006, and an honored writer in 2005 in the University Of Maine Binnacle Literary Arts Magazine. Moving easily between Spoken Word, Singer/Songwriter, and Dancer. Musician & Actress. This powerful woman believes in the inherent power of words and right action. She is also involved in working with Health and Youth Organizations as a teacher, facilitator and consultant. Deeply committed to raising awareness about HIV and Domestic Violence and education she often collaborates with groups to shed light on the issues.
She has graced numerous stages in Boston, and abroad performing her original poetry, songs and music. In June and July 17, 2010, she was one of the Artists featured in the Boston Globe and Boston Herald and selected to represent Zimbabwe in the 1st African Festival held at the Boston City Hall Plaza. She was the only female lead singer and her band performed to a crowd of hundreds! A sample of other performances range From Off Broadway Theatre in New York to The Book Café in Zimbabwe, Wally’s Jazz Café to The Horror Café in South Africa. She also self released wrote and produced a CD of spoken word & music “Soul Psalms-Birth, Death, Resurrexion” in 2003 . She was also one of the Lead Actresses in an African TV series in 2007 “ Ya Ma’ Afrika” which was filmed in New York and aired internationally showing the lives of Africans living in America.
