‘There was a time when all rock’n’roll bands had to have a frontman who sang this well – I had not heard a sound like this for years. And it was a delight – raspy enough, honeyed enough, with a range from crooning to howling’
The Orange Press ~ John H.
THE WIDOWBIRDS were born in late 2010 from a song writing project and calling of heart for long-time brothers in arms Simon Meli and Tony Kvesic. The co-writing pair instantly fell into a world that would see the band share stages with International greats, such as Paul Weller (The Jam/Style Council), Tony Joe White (USA) & Jeff Martin (The Tea Party) at the beginning of the bands journey.
Proudly living with the inspirations of classics such as Otis Redding, Frankie Miller & The Band ~ merged with their modern day musical love affairs with The Black Keys, The Black Crowes and everyday riff raff, THE WIDOWBIRDS deliver a deep soulfulness and truth, long missed in today’s music.
Their songs are a gritty back-boned rhythm and blues that often takes you down to the river in a sweaty gospel rant, however only first via a very solid and well-formed mystique and texture woven sound. Armed with a dangerous array of live performers, The Widowbirds stand shoulder to shoulder with the best the world has to offer.
‘...You boys make a real good noise...and I mean real good...’

International Tour Supports:
*Supported the Modfather himself, Paul Weller – after being hand plucked for an Australian wide national tour in October 2010.
*Bonded on Whiskey and Rye in an Australian East Coast Tour with legend Blues man and the Swamp Fox - Mr. Tony Joe White
*Jeff Martin from one of the world’s true rock bands – The Tea Party, forged friendships after
The Widowbirds supported his Solo Album tour 2011.
To witness the band live, would bare you victim to an experience you may yet to have felt.
The first initial exposure to Shane O’Neill ‘the Conga Junk Kit - rhythm maker’ is exotic. Balancing every move on a guttural instinct and closely resembling a ‘soul-sacrific ‘ that Carlos Santana himself would envy. Hemmed well by the rhythm sections most handsome and ‘pocket playing’ co- pilot on bass, Mr. Simon Wiltshire.
Tony ‘The Kid’ Kvesic brings a guitar playing that resembles, yet stands signatory amongst his greatest inspirations in Paul Kossoff, Malcolm Young and Freddie King. With a sweeping and often Eastern flair no too dissimilar to Page’s fine work in Zeppelin, whilst in keeping with a rhythm mandatory for every great rhythm and blues band.
Fronted by a man who has soul running through his veins and having been schooled by listening to the classic singers only these days, found on vinyl. Simon Meli posses an engaging and truly heart wrenching voice, that sits in the bannisters of range with Robert Plant, holds enough bite and rasp to resonate within the emotions of every listener, whilst turning phrase and charm into a classic Soul Rock voice, most similar to Paul Rogers of Free.
Often joined by their closest friend in Lachlan Doley. Australia’s true legend of Hammond Organ. Lachy has been fortunate to have toured and performed with the likes of Billy Thorpe (The Aztecs), Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple / Black Country Communion), Powderfinger and Jimmy Barnes (Cold Chisel).
The Widowbirds are fully formed with a wingspan in sound, wide enough to cross them from shore to shore around the world.
As reputations continue building, the band has been included as festival staples across the country and constantly sharing the lineup with many of Australia’s headlining artists and International artists, all the same.
The truth will always prevail and there’s honestly nothing more to convey than the quality of their debut album or the remarkable live performances.
With a busy road ahead for the band, the crystal ball shows sign that the 2nd record is already written and the band are in discussion with producers, planning the recording and release of a highly anticipated follow up release, whilst the band build momentum and set sail for their
European tour of Shenandoah, scheduled for Winter 2013.

Writing the debut record began in late 2010 in the Blue Mountains of Sydney. Simon Meli had been living here a short while, where the idea for the band was born.
Tony was invited up to Simon’s sanctuary for many songwriting sessions and the sound of The Widowbirds had begun. On an absolute natural high, tracking soon followed from the head down with all the songs written from Voice, Melody and Chords first – whilst the rest of the instrumentation began to vine itself around each song over time, as it was required and when the song called for it.
With layering of orchestral strings, married with the long draw of lapsteels, started to build a textural and deep weave for Shenandoah. Guitar amps, bass, roaring Hammond organs and upright piano’s were all rolled in leaving the drums and conga junk kit rhythms to be added last.
The debut record was graced by legend and good friend Steve Balbi (Noiseworks/ Electric Hippies) who mixed the final vision of Simon & Tony’s bird tales & mastered by Paul Gommersal.
‘...Lives Lived, Loved Lost...’ and a whole bunch of good times.
