Russell James Hughes………..“It’s all about the song”
When Texas based singer/songwriter Russell James Hughes was five years old he ran up to his dad and told him he wanted to be like Elvis Presley. His dad looked at him and said that was fine but that he should also consider Bob Dylan and the Beatles because they actually wrote their own songs. It’s one thing to sing somebody else’s song but if you can write your own, that’s where the real magic is at, his dad said. That never left his mind and that is exactly what he does now. Through years of listening and learning, watching and soaking up every melody and word like a sponge from idols such as those mentioned before, along with Jimi Hendrix, The Beach Boys, Merle Haggard, Marvin Gaye and countless others, he taught himself to play guitar at age 13 and never looked back.
Presently, Russell James Hughes resides in New York City. He is on the scene having released an album in 2011 produced by Steve Greenwell (Joss Stone), now available on iTunes. He also had an up-tempo rock song featured on an ABC Family movie (12 Dates of Christmas) in 2011. Russell has a knack for writing songs that stick in your head days after you hear them. You’ll find yourself humming his catchy riffs when you least expect it--in the shower or in the car. Russell’s songs are filled with biting lyrics and seasoned musicianship, and his stellar live shows are a thing to see. He has been described as having a Country Brit, rock sound with a touch of soul. Think Mark Bolan of T. Rex and Merle Haggard have a son (if they could) and let Uncle Hendrix baby sit him--strangely refreshing! Russell’s music is pleasing anytime of the day and is for all ages. Themes range from songs about homeless children and prostitution to selfish girlfriends with cocaine habits, and there is even one inspired by Al Pacino in Scarface. He has love songs and road songs and songs that just plain rock, like “Explode” off his debut album (Russell James Hughes Volume I). Eclectic I know, but it’s well worth it to get a listen and hear his gift for your self.
Russell James Hughes is currently playing and recording with the famed drummer Anton Fig (Late Show with David Letterman, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, James Brown) and bass player John Carey (New York City live music scene veteran and session player). With two more studio albums being produced, one by Anton Fig and the other by Steve Rossiter of Axis Sound Studios in Marble Hill, Hughes has no shortage of tunes coming your way.
