Derek had been singing songs in his head for years, but never seemed to find the proper idiom. Derek met Joyce, who said she'd always wanted to play the drums, though already quite proficient on a host of instruments. When Joyce started up a beat, Derek began to sing. And it sounded good. But Joyce and Derek knew they needed more help to make their groove groove. Derek talked his buddy's brother Pete into dropping by the house to drop some bass lines at an impromptu rehearsal. Pete was skeptical at first, but once he heard the line about "swinging my private parts," he was hooked. He called another buddy's brother, Aaron, who came by the house one day and proved he must be heard the minute he plugged in and laid it down like an original gangsta. When friends dropped in and asked what they called themselves, somebody called out: "The Usurpers!" Over time, they came to be known as "Usurper Vong!"
