Dr. Gary Furr has been playing, writing and singing since age 9. He has played with Shades Mountain Air, a Birmingham acoustic-bluegrass band, since 1998. They have recorded two CDs, Shades Mountain Air in 2000 and Sky’s A Clearing in 2004 on which Gary contributed original songs.
In 2007, Gary put out his first solo album of all original songs titled PERMANENT WORLD OF PRETEND. That was followed by his second CD, OVERLOAD OF BAD NEWS BLUES. He has just completed a third CD of songs, WHAT IT IS. All three are available for sale on his website. He has written over a hundred original songs and performs individually and with Shades Mountain Air.
He has performed with Shades Mountain Air throughout the country, including at Samford University, opening for the Blackwood Brothers, at Auburn University, Georgetown College (Ky) and in Memphis at the Baptist College of Health Sciences, churches, corporate events, and many other venues.
He has performed more than 125 times over the past ten years at churches, coffee houses, for the American Gospel Quartet Convention , at the Birmingham Area Music Awards show, and local venues like the Moonlight Music Café and Java & Jams, bluegrass festivals and at the Crawfish Boil.
Gary is currently the co-coordinator of the Birmingham Chapter of the NSAI (Nashville Songwriters Association International), a local songwriters group affiliated with the national organization of songwriters and has taught songwriting for children at elementary schools. Most recently he has completed soundtrack music for a short film, "Visitor to Virgin Pines."
In his vocation as a Baptist minister, Dr. Furr has also been an adjunct professor and often speaks and leads retreats and conferences. He is a graduate of Carson-Newman College and Southeastern Seminary and has the Ph.D. degree in religion from Baylor University. He is a published author, both books and dozens of articles over the years.
