Rustik Mode was founded in 2009, by Joe Normandin and Scott Dunning. After discussing music they both discovered they wanted to play original music and start a band.
Joe wanted to play again. He had taken a 17 year hiatus from music after moving to Arizona. Although he had never written a song before, he challenged himself to start writing songs for the band. At the same time, teaching himself how to play guitar again.
Not knowing exactly what the other band members had in mind, he wrote songs in a style he thought they wanted to play. It didn’t work out.
After a couple of false starts with different musicians coming and going, it was quickly back to just Joe and Scott. Not sure how to proceed, they decided to give it a pause and start up later.
Joe decided to continue writing songs. Without any influence from other band members, he wrote these songs in his own style.
Joe came up with the Band Name “Rustik Mode”, Rustik meaning “simple”, and mode meaning “method”. He wanted to get back to the basics. He loved melodic, simple guitar and something that was catchy. Although he had many influences in music, he wanted individuality for each song. He wanted his songs to have their own personality.
Joe posted some of his songs online, mainly out of doubt and frustration, wanting some sort of outside feedback. After receiving positive feedback from peers, he and Scott decided to give it another try.
Things took off from there. After much practice, they got a set together and played a couple of local bar shows as a trio in July of 2011. Still looking for the fourth player, the music wasn’t as complete as they hoped, but the response was good. There was no denying the up-tempo driving feel of the music and the band’s style also became apparent.
They then decided to focus on recording, while still hoping to come across another guitarist that fit.
Scott was very instrumental on the arrangement aspect of every song, and helped Joe develop a personality and style for each song.
Joe’s songs became the compilation for the CD. Joe and Scott produced, arranged and recorded all the tracks for the CD in Joe’s home studio.
Scott played bass on the CD. Joe did all of the guitar work on all the songs with the exception of “In an instants’ time and “Please let me be”.” The CD was completed in April of 2012.
