"Music is more than a sound. It's energy, frequencies and emotions. I can enhance a mood, alter an outlook, instill hope, create love, even change a life just by opening my mouth and sharing what God gave me."
Those are the words of Kyran McShaw; vocalist, songwriter, arranger. Brooklyn, NY born, Durham, NC raised and now calling Charlotte, NC home. He’s a southern boy with NY swag and LA talent; the man and his music – he just wants to be heard!
It's no shock that Kyran has a great appreciation for music and even greater talent. He grew up surrounded by distinguished musicians, singers, and songwriters. His parents sang with the late Grammy-nominated, gospel singer and composer, Rev. Timothy Wright, and also had their own accapella singing group, The McShaws. Kyran would sit in and participate with rehearsals then belted out his first solo at just 5 years old. As his talents continued to blossom, his interests grew to include Jazz, Rhythm and Blues, and Neosoul with an appreciation for Rock and Country as well.
After his first experience in an official recording studio in high school he realized singing was his life's purpose. He was awarded the opportunity to participate in NC All-State Choral Festival and the BrightLeaf Music Workshop headed by Duke University. Both programs give exceptional high school students a chance to participate in a highly selected group and an opportunity to work with outstanding choral directors.
While obtaining his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Industry at North Carolina Central University in Durham, opportunities continued to arise. Kyran had the chance to participate in the International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE). IAJE distributes student scholarships and is considered to be a pinnacle in the jazz community. Its programs connect professional artists, jazz enthusiasts and are considered to be a foundation in jazz education. Kyran was also a part of the Grady Tate Jazz Fest, a big honor as Tate is also a Durham native, NCCU grad and coincidentally began singing at the age of four.
Since graduation Kyran has had the exciting fortune of meeting saxophonist, composer and bandleader Branford Marsalis, singer, songwriter, vocal arranger and actor Darien Brockington, and hip hop record producer, record executive, DJ, lecturer, and Rapper, 9th Wonder also from Durham, North Carolina. In 2006 he opened the Goapele, Floetry and Juvenile concert and then in 2009 opened for Trey Songz and Calvin Richardson.
He’s performed with some of Charlotte’s best talent including, Innertwyned, best known as Anthony Hamilton’s band, The Harvey Cummings Project, Anything Goes, Mavis ‘Swan’ Poole, EMF Band and Soul Understated. He’s been able to travel the East Coast from New York to Florida sharing the energy, frequencies and emotions, he was talking about.
His discography includes his first solo project, Me & My Music Vol I in 2006. My Stage debuted in 2009 and featured the single My Queen which got play by DJ Barry King in London, UK, who considers himself a child of London’s first underground music scene. Although he has not signed with anyone, in 2011 Kyran became affiliated with IAMG Music, LLC, a startup label and in 2012 dropped his third CD, Me & My Music Vol II: I Just Wanna Be Heard.
And heard he will be! Kyran is continuing to work on his fourth project, expected to be released in2014 and in between studio time perform and broaden his reach as much as possible. He’s a performer to keep your eye on, a talent that is meant for international acclaim!
