EVERYTHING IS BETTER WITH GRAVY…EVERYTHING!
Andrew is a poet-songwriter-crooner, Leah plays the funk out of the big bass and Ward is a virtuoso drummer. Their collaboration of Americana music is best described as “funky, blue, soulgrass.” The 3 piece band combines super tight Vocal harmonies, Upright Bass, Guitar and a very cool modified Drumkit, known as “The Biskit”. They play mostly original tunes that sound like Paul Simon met Little Feat and Ry Cooder in a bar and then had a rumble with Lucinda Williams and The Roots in the parking lot.
Andrew and Leah have spent the last 8 years playing together. Their voices fuse like they were siblings, the nimble harmonies intricately weaving in and out, sometimes making it difficult to tell who is singing which part. They anticipate each other with psychic accuracy and the songs and performances reflect the ease and affection they have created with each other and The Gravy.
Andrew writes most of the tunes for The Gravy and he uses his lovely baritone voice to serenade as the lead vocalist. He pens small masterful stories that sound like your favorite, rascally uncle might tell you on the porch swing after a few beers. He is a fine guitarist as well, whether fingerpicking a quiet love song, blues-ing it up with the slide or funking out. His theatre background lends an ease to his comfortable stage presence and the witty stage banter between him and Leah is part of their engaging shows.
Leah has a gleeful command of the doghouse (upright bass) that she honed during her years as a touring bassist, which she reveals playing complex lines usually reserved for electric bass. She grew up in the mid-west steeped in folk music, blues and Chicago Jazz. Her style can be warm and melodic or syncopated and intricate a la James Jamerson. Her basslines combine seamlessly with what the skillfully adept Ward Griffiths lays down.
Ward’s favorite thing is locking into a tight groove with a bassist. Her playing complements Andrew and Leah perfectly, adding just the right amount of pepper to The Gravy. Her playing is dynamic, always supporting the songs– whether subtle, playful, or outright funky, she is always intuitive and inventive and her mastery of the drums is rare.
The Gravy has headlined festivals, played local clubs, and serenaded your family at weddings, entertained at corporate parties and played house concerts. They are available to do any and all of the above…
