In exploring life beyond his years as co-leader of the Paul deLay Band, piano pounder David Vest has taken some new directions, including a highly-acclaimed Northwest Pianorama tour. Performing under his own name in more recent shows, it seemed as though the full range of his talent had finally been unleashed. By reinventing Sun Ra classics as roadhouse dance music, mixing gospel and country with old time blues and boogie, he was clearly aiming for a higher (and deeper) target than the average blues band tries to hit. Judging by audience reaction, it works —probably because he does all of it with absolute sincerity and obvious authenticity. The blues, he says, is "music that lifts you up — without lying to you."
