As child Paul was introduced to the love of music by his mother Lillian who was an accomplished cellist. At the age of five he was giving keyboard recitals at the Curtis Institute. By the age of 13 he was jamming with the likes of Eric Bazilian (Hooters), and Richard Ray Adler (Dukes of Destiny). In his early 20's he played in a Blues band and sold out venues like the Starlight Ballroom. In the time that has passed since those days he has continued to perform, write and record. Recently Paul has played a duet with Childhood friend Eric Bazilian and videos from the legendary DOBBS in Philly can be found on youtube
In 2010, Paul became a cast member in the George Manny produced documentary “Meet me on South Street the Story of J.C. Dobbs,” Paul's history with the venue spans many yeas that include countless performances, most notably with Jamison Smooth Dog and Stewkey [the vocalist from Todd Rundgrem's band Nazz]. The band was known as “Boom.” This group was performing “unplugged” long before the pop culture of today coined the term and made it “cool.” It was quite possibly the first acoustic rock band in Philly.
Paul is known for his tell it like it is, in-your-face street heart lyric lines that are masked by beautiful melodic tunes. How many die-hard Philly music fans can say “I saw Bruce in a coffee house” or “I saw Nirvana at Dobbs” or “remember when we saw Billy Joel in that piano bar?” Come to the next show and you will say "I saw Paul Kurrey solo."
NOW THERE IS THE PAUL KURREY BAND which has played most notable venues such as World Cafe Live Dobbs Connies Ric Rac and many shows in NYC. Paul still does the occasional solo and was joined by Eric Bazilian at one turning it into an unrehearsed duet of Paul's songs this was in 2014 to celebrate his beating throat cancer....you tube has videos of this event along with those from the Philly music scene that showed up from 2pm till 2am on a MONDAY in October to play a benefit for Paul. The band all went in different directions while Paul was Ill but when he was still under going treatment and Bazilian flew in from Sweden he jumped on stage with a friend he had not seen in 30 years and they played a song together...the tear jerk moment of the night in 2012 .
The PKB band got back for the 40th anniversary of Dobbs and now with a new Drummer is starting up again. Venues, management and all that change in 4 years so it's a real last minute comeback as amnesia seems to hit the music scene quick........The shows have been incredible and jaws drop as feet s tap and even had some dancing in the street outside a club. The one question people always ask is how come we never heard this before....... so lets get this band booked to open for longer running acts and more well know acts and you will eventually get a headliner!
Enjoy and download the free mp3's all solo stuff from Before Paul Got ill. A band recording is in the works soon.
