Fronted by singer-songwriter and instrumentalist Shawn Craver, Raging Sea is one of Wichita's most prolific original bands. Pat Audley of the infamous Artichoke Sandwich Bar calls Raging Sea, "The best band in doodah (Wichita.) "The band's performances around central Kansas number into the 100s with a range of styles that attract lovers of music in varying styles. Overtones of The Cure, The Beatles, and Bob Dylan arise midst guitars that prefer to weep than twang and a fashion statement that as been described as folk-goth.
Raging Sea fans know the lyrics to the songs and often sing along. From "the shadows of the clouds were on the mountainside, Friar Tuck was laughing drinking mead and wasting time" to "grave digger grave digger come and sing your song with me, pass the bottle pass the time, talk about how life passes us by," the songs often portray the dark side of life with a smattering of optimism. "Pictures in the stairwell filled with empty eyes, broken dreams cover them all. Soon the light will come, soon they will be gone, and I can finally sleep at dawn. I can finally dream when the sun shines." The Steampunk flavor of "Steam Roll" begins wth the lines, "We shoveled on all of the coal, this thing is ready to go. So reach high and reach low, this train is ready to blow, so let the steam roll" and characters like the popular "Katy McQuinn" appear in the night... "I fell in love there with Katy McQuinn and oh how I want to see her again. She lives in the highlands, was married in the fall, I'd be a liar if I said I don't miss her at all."
The Raging Sea fan is special. Artists, designers, musicians, writers, professors, lawyers, nerds, geeks, carpenters and firemen all follow the band. The songs are stories and the Raging Sea show is an adventure that the band will freely invite you to join, but they will not drag you kicking and screaming. Your place in it is yours to accept.
