Bad Circus / Bio

Bad Circus is a band of four average white guys from various parts of Virginia and North Carolina. The group officially began making music as a unit in 2007 during their college years. Their first album, Sense of Motion, was completed in November 2011.

Sense of Motion is the fruit of a year spent tucked away in the mountains of western North Carolina. Despite three previous years active, they had very little actual shared time because of the distances between their schools. After graduation, they decided upon isolation in the mountains in order to write and record an album.

Sense of Motion’s lyrics borrow heavily from Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. Feelings of tension and desperation in the novel’s characters rang a bell with band. Stepping out of school into a world where so much is at stake, the band used the novel to convey their uncertainty going forward.

Bad Circus tried an ambitious approach to accentuate the story they found themselves retelling. Sense of Motion is loaded with interludes, narration, and generally unfamiliar sounds. These additions are intended to immerse the listener in the chaotic and objectionable world experienced by Bradbury’s characters, Montag and Clarrise.

The band felt it was critical to take complete control of every aspect of the album. From it’s birth as loose jams in the mountains of Banner Elk, NC, to it’s context in Bradbury’s Elm City, and it’s final completion in their new home of Raleigh, NC, every aspect of Sense of Motion comes directly from a digitally empowered band confronted with the harsh realities of today’s world.

“Cram them full of noncombustable data, chock them so damned full of ‘facts’ they full stuffed, but absolutely brilliant with information. Then they’ll feel they’re thinking, they’ll get a sense of motion without moving.” -Ray Bradbury 1953
