“The Steven Spielberg of Boston Hip Hop!”, “A refreshing perspective” are some of the quotes used to describe Daniel Laurent also known as DL regarding his heartfelt, thought provoking music.
His debut cd was recorded in two sessions of 3 hrs each and spawned his most successful song to date “MASSterpiece (The Anthem)”, which went on to become the most requested single by a local or national artist according to WERS 88.9FM. It also got significant airplay on Hot 97.7, Jamn 94.5 as well as other college radio stations in the New England region. The momentum continued when XM Satellite radio picked it up and added it to their “The City” radio channel generating interest in other markets.
DL has performed all throughout Boston, booking colleges, generating mini tours in NH, performing at various clubs in New York City as well as even doing an impromptu performance with a live band for Ms. Janice Combs (Sean Combs mother) for her birthday celebration.
Writing his own treatments and being very instrumental in his video making process has made some very interesting and buzzworthy videos. He chooses to go against the grain with the normal imaging and instead chooses dramatic or comedic visuals to help illustrate his storylines.
DL formed Self Made Entertainment to provide his own vehicle to release his own media unapologetic and without red tape. He has since went on to release and/or help facilitate 3 albums, 1 cd/dvd combo, a 12” single, an exclusive digital only album, 5 videos, 4 independent films, 1 soundtrack, an online blog about everything Hip Hop in Boston (music, nightlife, shows, apparel), the very successful venture of MASSterpiece Radio (internet radio that garnered 20k unique listeners each week and peaked at 50k). With being featured on over 20 artists’ feature albums, compilations and mixtapes, DL is determined to triple his drive by years end.
He is now prepping his newest release “Hustler’s Spirit: The Idea” for an early January release and has already shot 3 videos and will be shooting a fourth video by early December. Lead by “MASSterpiece 2.0”, DL is returning to the same grind and tenacity that garnered him attention in the first place. The song is a homage to his hometown and all that is has to offer from the films and television shows to educational institutions and hometown heroes. “I am known for the Boston song and this was grandest finale of that chapter.”
