Macedo / Bio

Duality and individuality are overriding themes in the music of MACEDO, the surname of twin sisters Michelle and Melissa, who have taken a lifetime of creative energy and talent and produced their emotionally compelling, richly textured EP titled “Paper Doll”.

Born and raised in Pasadena, California, Michelle and Melissa Macedo were initially influenced by both Portuguese and Indian music as their father emigrated to the U.S. from the former Portuguese colony of Goa in India. Immersed in music and the arts at an early age, they nurtured their unique artistic leanings in close quarters both literally and psychologically. The concept of duality emerged in their work as they began confronting their individual identities.

The girls are basically opposites in nature and temperament yet are connected by that inexplicable emotional bond only shared by twins. In addition, the concept of home and questions related to a sense of belonging come to the forefront as they deal with their biracial East Indian/European background.

While away at school on the East Coast, Michelle honed her songwriting producing a solo EP, La Luna in her first year and in a subsequent flurry of creativity, wrote the bulk of the 2011 album “FLAGS AND BOXES”mostly during her last semester..

The two decided to sing and write together because of their natural chemistry, the way their similar voices blend and the instinctive, seamless communication that had always been part of their musical lives.

Thematically, Macedo’s compositions on “Paper Doll” deal with universal subjects of self-discovery, interpersonal relationships and of developing an individual voice.

Separating for extended lengths of time while they attended different colleges on the East Coast helped them establish separate identities differences that are apparent when they perform which lends an exciting artistic tension to their accomplished show.

Melissa and Michelle speak of their album “Everyone thought of us collectively, and compared us to each other—shes the smart one, shes the funny one and all that. We needed to become our own people. But were excited to be back together and working on this music. We each bring a cool perspective to the mix. We instinctively know what will sound good and what will work.

While the songs are driven by Michelles artful acoustic piano, MACEDO became known for their sound integrating unique sounds such as French horn, Wurlitzer, grand piano, electric bass, guitar, violin, cello and organ creating a rich and unique palette.

The upcoming album PAPER DOLL was developed out of a sense of fusion. MACEDO’s sound has developed integrally since their last album which received so much praise that they were invited to play all over the country on the ‘Flags & Boxes’ tour which included a performance in Austin,Texas during the SXSW festival on the Red Gorilla Stage.

PAPER DOLL is based on the soulful tones of Michelle’s grand piano and the artful harmonies of Melissa’s violin integrated with their breathtaking vocal harmonies. The sound is heavily based on their live shows which include cello, violin and organ. Paper Doll features a live and raw sound that one rarely hears in today’s music. Every instrument adds a layer of texture to the soothing vocals blends that Michelle and Melissa provide. Specializing in the harmonies, the duo was able to work as a conducive creative team.

PAPER DOLL features the immeasurable creative growth of the duo since their last album was released. The theme of a mystical creative utopia reflects the musical chemistry the girls are lucky enough to experience. All six songs (all written by Michelle & Melissa) were engineered and produced by MJ Denton. Organ parts were recorded and played by Khris Kellow (Christina Aguilera). Drum tracks were recorded by Neil Citron at DogHouse Studios. The truly one of a kind album was mixed and mastered by Keith Sterling at Victory Recorders. Macedo could not be more excited to share their new sound with the world and prepare to take over the indie scene by storm.

It should surprise no one that the album has been pronounced a virtual certainty to propel Michelle into the first rank of modern female singers and songwriters, and Macedo, the group that she and Melissa so capably lead, to the top of playlists the world over.
