Swamp Music Players are a band with a passion for Southern Roots Rock, Cosmic Americana music and the Swamp genres (Swamp Rock,Swamp Pop, Swamp Blues & Swamp Funk). We consider ourselves a retro-futuristic swamp band that is built on the foundation of previous decades but moves forward in unexpected ways. We especially enjoy the crossroads of the late 70’s and early 80’s when good ole time Rock’N’Roll was cool again and co-existing with transistor technology.
We like the authentic and honest music of the past and attempt to move it forward in a cinematic style influenced by how past generations envisioned the 21st century in both movies and pop-culture.
SMP consists of seasoned professional Jazz musicians as well as talented amateurs from the music scene with a common love for Southern music. We are a diverse group and collaborate with local and international artists, Our music art projects have a strong thematic and theatrical edge. We aim to entertain and provide lots of depth to our projects and bring both seasoned artists as well as outsider artists aboard.
We have been on FM radio in Canada, USA, Greece and the Canary Islands. We have charted in Kingston Ontario and won an accolade in Alabama.
We started out July 10th 2010 as a rotational lineup or collective of amateur musicians and no-collar-workers putting on a few charity shows or to raise work-retraining for our Louisiana penpal "Swamp Girl" Danielle Leigh Rashall. She went on to be a big contributor to our art style. SMP slowly put together a self-titled album by December 2012 and by that time SMP had become more of a band and attracted the interest of local Jazz musicians looking for an outlet for their love of all things Swamp! With a serious rhythm section, a classically trained pianist turned Americana composer and an equally eccentric front lineup of semi-professionals and hopefuls SMP began to earn the attention of National and International outlets. Local press called us "Prophets In Their Hometown" and we even got on local TV where they were equally perplexed as we hosted a "Swamp Music" show with some of the best bands in the province such as "Pigeon Park" and "The Revival".
SMP first charted in Kingston Ontario in early 2013 and saw lots of Campus airplay in Ontario,British Columbia and the Maritimes. "Jack Antonio Show" was a big supporter as it rebroadcast on several FM and online shows. In the USA we won a minor accolade in Tuscaloosa Alabama and saw plenty of spins with Idaho's Peace River Valley "Southern Low Down" and Missouri's "Basement Tapes with Nicky and Bootsy" and 40foothole online in New Jersey. We saw international airplay/2013 in too many places to list but most memorable was "New Country Show" in Mannheim Germay, RootsTime.BE Belgium, RadioKC France and Atlantis FM in the Canary Islands.
On May 12th 2015 we launched our sophomore album "Timeless Cool" and launched a new live show at the release party at the historic "Railway Club" in downtown Vancouver. RJ Comer a Los Angeles music insider and notable swamp musician flew up to perform in Victoria and Vancouver. RJ is just one of several VIPs that were willing to be on the album "Timeless Cool". VIPs such as London UK musicians Wily Bo Walker, NatGeo TV personality and humorist Jason Murphy and underground Virginia folk artists Joseph Gearheart.
