Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue
The Perfect Children are the romp and stomp;the fresh wound of broken love;laughing in spite of pain. They are a girl with something to say and a boy to help deliver the message, cathartic but engaging.Their energy is infectious, the notes ring out and the space between is an emotional exhalation-personal but vague. They live at the intersection of Holly Golightly,Dex Romweber,Nina Simone,Al Green and Otis Redding. They are a duo out of necessity for the simplicity of the sound, not bandwagon hoppers. They play from the gut, heart, and soul and are rough, raw, and real. They will guilt trip you into getting outta your seats with their dirty showcase, further punctuated by 2 backing vocalists (Beth Harris of The Hiders/ Nicole Potter Borngrebe) who aid in lifting the stage off the floor and blowing the doors off the joint. They have recently added new member Victor Strunk on bass To quote Little Richard, they will curl up under your big toe.
Kristen Kreft, Cincinnati Entertainment Award Winner and three time Nominee (guitar/electric piano/organ/vocals/songwriter) has an eclectic background in musical theater, backing soul vocalist, dirty blues band member, and more that gave her the chops to be a powerhouse front woman. Inspired by true greats such as Nina Simone, Etta James, Memphis Minnie, Little Ester, Odetta, as well as male greats Otis Redding, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, young Michael Jackson, and the list continues, she honed her vocal skills by tapping into pure soul, energy and emotion.
Drummer Adam Shelton has added his slant to an array of local music projects, including dissonant post-punk duo Barbary Coast, The backwoods hellbilly chaos of Luther The Geek, an extended tenure with instant-composers, and Cincy mainstay Gordy Horn (also featuring James Brown trumpet legend Clayton Gunnels), and also currently with instrumental exploratory trio RX-2 and Kailip. The Perfect Children reignites a long-defunct musical relationship with Kristen in support of her majestic voice and commanding presence.
The real beauty in The Perfect Children, is in the simplicity of the song enabling the story to be told through raw soul and energy. The groove of the song is also reverant. Never are there too many notes getting in the way of the true integrity of the song and the story. The songs are personal, but vague enough that all can relate to them. The hooks are infectious, and diverse. No song is like the next, yet the through line is the vocal, and respect for space and energy.
Expect a proper show when you see The Perfect Children.
