Ummagma is a delightful dreamy ethereal ear candy swirl, and has had a full-page feature in Rolling Stone Russia. They've won Alternative Eurovision competitions for 2 years in a row (Amazing Radio & Pure 107.8 FM), and received 2 awards at the 2013 Australian Independent Music Video Awards, as well as catching the attention of Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins) and Malcolm Holmes (OMD), who have remixed tracks for release in spring 2015. Most recently, Ummagma picked up two award at Australia's 2014 AIMVA Awards for Best International Electronic/Dance Video (for remix of Huge Shark 'Line of Life') and Best East European Video (with Sounds of Sputnik).
Ummagma is a Canadian-Ukrainian duo comprised of Alexx Kretov and Shauna McLarnon. Ummagma’s musical style is vacillating and broadly influenced “easy positive music” with intense richly-layered landscapes of pulsating sound, a mixture of the ethereal with sublime resonance, beats and rhythm that effectively creates richly layered landscapes. While this music encompasses several genres of music – dream pop, progressive rock, post-rock, ambient/ethereal, shoegaze and post-punk – there is a common remarkable theme, elevating atmosphere and stirring effect in Ummagma’s music.
Ummagma began in Moscow, but have been living between Canada and Ukraine since. They released 2 LPs ('Ummagma' & 'Antigravity') at the same time in 2012 and, more recently, released the single 'Rotation', the 'Lama' LP and 'Kiev Remixes' on Germany boutique label Emerald & Doreen Recordings.
For Alexx, making music began in childhood and recording began with a double-deck recorder in post-Soviet Ukraine. Shauna’s songwriting began with acapella tunes. Sasha is originally from Kremenets (western Ukraine) and Shauna is from Whitehorse, Yukon (Canada). This joint project began as a huge affair with love and sound in Moscow 2003.
