Doug Matern / Bio

Doug was born in Schnectady, NY on October 25, 1949. He has a sister. After his mother and birth father divorced, she remarried and her new husband brought two daughters into the family making it a family of 4, Doug being the only boy. His mother and stepfather had a son and then a family of 5 children would soon move to the Space Coast in Florida. Doug sang in the boy's choir at church but later became interested in the guitar and was mentored by his late best friend, Donnie Osborne. They spent most of their time together, writing music and playing music. After leaving home early, he focused on getting his education. He attended community college and then transferred to FTU/UCF to get his degree in electrical engineering. Because he was putting himself through college he had very little time to give to anything else but school. Because of lack of money he would take the maximum hours allowed so that the got more bang for the buck. Back in the day, after you paid your tuition for 12 hours of coursework you could add up to 20 hours for no extra money, so he took 20 hours each semester and worked 40 hours per week. He is a very driven individual. He graduated and took a job as an electrician, then found a job as an electrical engineer. Later he started his own very successful engineering firm where he works today. During the decades of building a business he married and had two children with his wife of 29 years, Terri. The children are both grown and out in the workforce. Doug has been driven to write songs, waking in the middle of the night to set the melody and lyrics before he forgets it. He likes to do recordings of the music even though they may only be heard by very few people. He played on and off with small acoustic groups in local venues, or wedding, or friends homes. With the children grown and gone, he and his wife, Terri create recorded versions of his songs together and he decided that it was time to be a little more serious about the songs that he writes. He learned about and signed up for ReverbNation.com and joined NSAI to attend Spring Boot Camp in Nashville and he sends songs for review to NSAI. He was influenced by singer/songwriters like Tom Petty, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Tracey Chapman, Bonnie Raitt, and Little River Band in his early years and became further influenced by Alan Jackson, Vince Gill, and some of the pop music that falls into the country genre these days These influences have led him to have his own style which ranges from soft rock, pop, country and blues/jazz. He also writes some instrumentals. The newest and most positive event recently is that a song that he wrote was recorded by the legendary Quad studio in Nashville, with Dr Paul Constantine. Since then, in 2013 and early 3014, he has had 5 more songs recorded at the studio, then went on to record 10 more with his wife/singer Terri Matern in 2014, also at the Quad Studio under the producer Doc Holiday. He has high hopes of hearing them on the radio soon.
